That, the earlier Drummer of Tedworth and one rapping incident in the 1830's could easily have started things off except too often there was an underlying belief in it being Satanic.

I'll have to keep this in mind if anyone at my church (Methodist) starts giving me a hard time about Spiritualism. Very Happy

Ann Lee of Shaker fame too. She was a medium before the name was invented. Ann was locked up in Strangeways [Manchester Gaol] prior to release and departure to America. All sorts of manifestatons reported around her and papers of the time report that the warders were glad too see her go such were the rappings and noise around her.
Time was being mediumistic bought a one way ticket to stake or gallows. It needed the safer days of Fox sisters for mediums to be able to go public without fear of nasty consequences .
In my dad's day they were still locking up mediums but not executing them as was once the fashion.

Chap I bumped into a time or two at research conferences up to a couple of years ago called Tim Wooley a Methodist minister over here was doing a PhD on early charismatic and spiritualistic phenomena amongst Methodists. He could have published by now. Tim edited Methodist Evangelicals Today journal and one got the distinct impression that the Methodist powers that be did not entirely approve his research topic area.
I had that about Wesley being a spiritual healer and galvanist from Tim. The info is there to be found but not in Methoodist church publications. As ever, the victors get to write the history books.
