By Dr. Peter Lamont

A seance took place in August 1852, in a large house in South Manchester, Connecticut, the house of Ward Cheney, a wealthy silk manufacturer, and it was here that Daniel Dunglas Home's rise to fame truly began.

According to an eye-witness, Daniel 'was thrown into a spiritually magnetic state, producing great rigidity of muscle, including a magnetic locking of the jaws. He than spelt out (with his eyes bandaged) some remarkable and interesting messages with almost incredible rapidity. One message concerned two sailors lost at sea, relatives of one of the company.'

The spirits caused the table to roll in the manner of a vessel in a violent tempest accompanied by an equally violent creaking of the cables of a ship when strained in a gale; then came the loud sound of a prolonged wailing, shrieking blast of wind, precisely such a noise as the wind makes in the rigging of a ship in a storm at sea -- and the cracking of the timbers and masts as the vessel surged to one side or the other was distinctly heard by all. Next came the regular, sullen shocks of the waves as they struck the bows of the doomed vessel... And now the large table was capsized on the floor! All this was done with no one touching the table, as a close and constant scrutiny was kept up by two, at least, of our party.

There were then 'tremendous rappings all about us. Some of the blows on the walls, floor, and tables, within three inches of myself, were astounding. I could hardly produce such violent demonstrations with my fist, though I were to strike with all my might. The very walls shook.'

Yet however dramatic the raps, messages and moving tables, they were already part of an emerging repertoire, and it seems that not everybody was astounded as the witness. And so he asked Daniel 'that the spirits would give us something that would satisfy everyone in the room'

Suddenly and without any expection on the part of the company, Mr Home was taken up in the air! I had hold of his hand at the time, and I and others held his feet -- they were lifted a foot from the floor! He was palpitated from head to foot apparently with conteding emotions of joy and fear which choked his utterance. Again and again he was taken from the floor, and the third time he was carried to the lofty ceiling of the house.

The word of this remarkable feat spread, and the name Daniel Home began to be spoken of in other countries.

From Home's autobiography, "Incidents in my Life".

It's actually written differently as it's by Dr. Peter Lamont, a Research Fellow at the University of Edinburgh who wrote a book on Home entitled The First Psychic.

I have all of Home's autobiographies, including Lights and shadows of spiritualism.

All spiritualistisc masterpieces.

D.D. Home is my favorite medium, he was by far the greatest.

So have I, Azur.

As a matter of interest, on what basis do you claim that Home 'was by far the greatest'?

He was by far the greatest medium of his time, he'd spirit gifts in a abundance.

Trance clairvoyance, direct voice (spirit-laughter and spirit-voices), Second sight, (gift of prophecy) The levitations of objects/movement of heavy furniture, Accordion, harp and guitar played by spirit hands, Spirit music, The scent withdrawn from flowers (Mrs Piper had this gift also) and brought through the air and given to sitters. Able to hold hot coals in his hands, spirit lights, rappings and stream of electric sparks, Spirit forms visible, spirit hands touching sitters. Spirit writings, spirit wind, cases were his head or hands became luminous, elongation of his body and the most famous of them all, The Ashley house, were he levitated out of the third storey window of one room at Ashley house, and back in through the window of the adjoining room in front of three witnesses, men of high standing, Viscount Adare, Captain Wynne and Lord Lindsay.

There were many fine mediums of the victorian era and not all achieved spirit phenomena D.D. Home did, by far D.D. Home was the greatest of his time.
