Here we go more press that makes us all look weird and rather shabby

I am reliably informed there is a "healer" in Queensland who insists on this too.

I don't like to comment about pending criminal cases.

But just out of curiousity: on what basis do spiritual healers charge fees for their services? Are they licensed in some way?

Ah that is a burning question Jim and there is no one answer. I agree about the case let us see how it turns out in the end.

Spititual Healing is just what it says it is and the practioners could have any personal belief system as long as it is bringing healing through from God or Spirit. Within this broad definition there could be strict training or zilch training where the individual creates some new version of cosmonology healing (we have many of those broadly invoking spirit via the aliens)

At the top end of stictness would be teh two years training , practical and written theory, including examination to become a member of The National Federation of Healers in the UK. In the USA Reiki has effectively supplanted Spiritual Healing from Spiritualist Churches. Within the churches there are legal reasons for that, Reiki is a registered healing system whereas normal Spiritual healing is restricted to hand contact purely above shoulder level.

In good old Aus we have a group trying to start a baranch of the UK National Federation but the only qualified trainer is in New Zealand. Elsewhere training, by and large is just hands on the shoulders to see if the healing energy flows through them. At our Mission we have a two day intensive course to become a registered spiritual healer with a hoped for adnavced course.

Ok Jim you get the picture from healing. Its spread is broader than the new age, as are the myriad of alternative healings based off it. I have not even gone into the Trance healing mediums.

Within Spiritualism charging for healing is as controversial as charging for mediumship. However if you are a professional healer or medium you have to make a living. My own definition would be to never charge for healing but were I making a living for it I would use a charge based on what my time was worth ( that is easy because it would be a direct substitution for my consulting work). Its the same approach I use for readings, when someone can persuade me to do one because they want contact with loved ones not fortune telling (circa 85% of people seeking readings over here want the latter).

That places a value on the time not what I do for Spirit. It may sound nit picking but it does mean I would never be charging high prices regardless (tempting though I always wonder about adopting a flamboyant persona and new weird techniques to charge higher). The phobia about charging does mean I am even more reticent to do readings.

Some do their work for free earning their living elsewhere. That is what I do and the vast majority of hours I put in for the mission I am involved with as leader, doing classes, platform mediumship, healing, fund raising readings, also running this forum, research and writing articles is voluntary. The few things I get renumerated for come no where near recouping the costs involved.

There are very many people like me involved in the Spiritualist movement itself, indeed I suspect the vast majority around the world, by a long way I am not alone in this.

However there will always be the others wanting to create a very expansive living, charging huge amounts. Whether people get value for money I do not know but it does appear the more you charge and the whackier the delivery the more peole have been conditioned by our material world to believe it has value. So come and get a $15, 20 minute reading at a centre on an open day then go and pay $150 for an hour with a "real" medium.

Fortunately the Psychic "thing" has been going so strong now I note a drop off of interest and more discernment amongst people.

So sorry Jim no one answer there are very reputable organisations licensing people but ther is also far more out there who have created their own healing "modalities" (their buzz word). there are some who do or do not charge who have a license but I suspect the vast majority with their own modalities normally do so on a paid basis. Just like readings charges could vary from an equivalent $60 for an hour to $800-$1,000 per hour for the "elite".

I'm thinking in terms of the quasi-medical aspects of healing.

I would think that if someone wants to go to a medium, trying to reach a deceased relative, this would be regarded differently than if you go to a Spiritualist healer, seeking relief from, say, pain in your shoulders.

The healer is offering services of a quasi-medical nature, and charging people for doing so generally requires that you be certified and licensed by some sort of regulatory body: as a physician, chiropractor, acupuncturist, etc.

I agree Jim and the number of mispractices is appalling. Yet despite incidents such as have occured here in Adelaide, where a healer stopped a cancer patient from taking their prescribed medications because she was being cured, with predictable results, the Government has not regulated the whole alternative healing business.

I believe each of the states are contemplating action (its not a federal issue) but none as yet. When it does happen it will put a very large cat amongst the pigeons. However, I suspect that it will become a toothless law only enacted when there is a complaint. This is only likely to happen when someone becomes agrieved, malicious or a patient is harmed.

Many believers would never report someone even if their health deteriorated, others who are caught and realise it are usually too embarassed to report it.

The reality is also that psychics can, in fact, do almost as much harm but there is no action occuring even where the law was changed in the UK to simplify matters. Reality is all alternative healers and psychics/mediums should be subject to some controls and registration/qualification because of teh potential to do harm.

Hmm to bring that legislation in may require the Governments to actually believe there may be something in what we do.
